The farmers
Asep Rukman began his career as a dairy farmer. In 1986, he bought his first farm for a pack of cigarettes. Yes really. After retirement, he consciously chose coffee and grew to become a pioneer within Pangalengan's specialty scene. With his focus on sustainable agriculture and innovation, he now inspires 28 farmers within the farmer group Sunda Tilu.
The plantations
Sunda Tilu is located at an altitude of 1450 to 1560 meters. At this altitude, the berries ripen slowly, providing more complexity and depth of flavor.
At Sunda Tilu, the beans grow under shade trees such as acacia eucalyptus and albasia. Between the rows are lettuce and chili peppers. This helps against weeds and encourages biodiversity and provides additional income.
The cooperatives
Both Asep look beyond the harvest. The focus is on achieving better prices so that families can invest in education and welfare.
Here, coffee is not an afterthought. It is work and community and future. And sometimes ... even an unexpected calling.
