The coffee farmer:
Chairwoman Rahmah is the driving force behind the Ketiara cooperative in Takengon, Sumatra. She founded the cooperative in 2008, with a focus on Fairtrade and organic coffee. What makes Ketiara special is that 70% of its 1,100 members are female. Rahmah encourages its members by paying them above-market prices and by setting up community projects. These projects, funded by Fairtrade premiums, improve the lives of coffee farmers by giving them access to more modern resources and better transportation. Equality and sustainability are central to Rahmah and Ketiara. In July of this year, Esther and Rick visited the welcoming coffee farmers of the Hutan Project to better understand the Ketiara cooperative's coffee production and strengthen cooperation with the Hutan Project. They gained insight into sustainable production methods, the role of Fairtrade premiums, and saw how these contribute to the betterment of the local community. They also explored the challenges farmers face, such as climate change and infrastructure, and explored ways to support them in modernization and environmental conservation.
The plantation and the coffee:
Located in the Gayo Mountains, the Ketiara plantation in Takengon, Sumatra, is a place where sustainability and biodiversity are key. The coffee bushes grow under the shade of banana, orange and avocado trees, which not only provides protection but also generates additional income for the farmers. In addition to coffee, the plantation also provides cinnamon, jackfruit and other crops that are sold at local markets. The plantation, which has been family-owned for generations, is completely organic and takes care to preserve the natural environment. Thanks to projects such as the Hutan program, the plantation is continuously modernized and improved.
Organization:
The Ketiara cooperative in Aceh, Sumatra, is a well-run organization led by chairwoman Rahmah that focuses on sustainable and fair coffee production. For the Hutan Project, which means "forest" in Bahasa, Ketiara works to protect the Leuser ecosystem, one of the last places where elephants, rhinos, tigers and orangutans live together. Instead of working with NGOs, Rahmah chooses to manage the project internally, focusing on tree planting on farms. This encourages farmers to stay involved, as they themselves benefit from the yield of fruit and shade trees.
