Coffee farmer Dairo Heliberto and his family on the coffee farm in Colombia
Background:
Due to corona, it is now impossible to visit the farmers from the Coffee for Peace project. We have been in virtual contact via Zoom and buying the best coffees in Antioquia. It is special (and also touching) to see the farmers with mouth caps on as they introduce themselves in Spanish. In the virtual discussion, the tasting experts from Colombia who supervise the Coffee for Peace project are full of enthusiasm for Dairo Heliberto Gonzales Jaramillo's coffee. They give 88 points on the scale of 100. Barend and Rick arrived at almost the same points (87.75) in their blind tasting. "The moment I smelled the ground coffee, I knew it," says Barend. "So floral, really exceptionally delicate and layered. Great coffee."
Dairo and his wife have been growing coffee at their finca Laureles for more than 40 years. This is located near the municipality of Amalfi in the province of Antioquia. Antioquia is the second largest coffee province in Colombia with as many as 90,000 coffee farmers. Dairo's children have been working on the farm for 10 years. They are very concerned about whether coffee farming will be a profitable profession for their children as successors. Specialty coffee has brought security to their lives. Dairo's goal is to improve all the facilities on the coffee plantation and become better and better as a coffee farmer. When growing coffee, he pays close attention to soil analysis and proper fertilization. At harvest time, only the beautiful, ripe red berries are picked. With purified water, the berries are cleaned before being de-pulped and dried on the finca. This way he achieves the best results and can generate more income for his family and the plantation.
Coffee for Peace is a project in which Willem Boot, Barend Boot's brother, plays an important role and in which coffee farmers in Colombia are taught to grow better coffee so that they can get a higher price and thus coffee cultivation becomes a better alternative than, for example, the coca plant.
