Meet the coffee farmer:

Coffee farmer: Getachew Zeleke
Coffee: Ethiopia Organic
Plantation: Dimtu Tero Farm
Location: Ethiopia, Guji Region

The coffee farmer:

Getachew Zeleke, founder of Dimtu Tero Farm, is ambitious. He wants to become a leader in quality, traceability and sustainability in the Guji region.
Getachew focuses on integrating stakeholders in the supply chain. Simply put, he works with smallholder farmers who have the vision to grow a thriving and sustainable coffee community near the villages of Tero, Jelewo Anona, Mancity and Hangadi. They become equal partners.

The plantation and coffee:

Dimtu Tero covers 151 hectares of land in the Odo Shakiso region, where the natural environment is conducive to producing some of Ethiopia's best coffees.

Coffee from the Guji area is popular for its great aromatic complexity and intensity. These bushes grow in the shade at an altitude of 1800 to 2150 meters. The Ethiopia Dimtu Tero is certified organically grown and EKO certified which means it was purchased from small farmers at a fair, economically sustainable price.

Barend Boot: "My first visit to Ethiopia was in 2005. My brother Willem organized one of the first Ethiopian coffee competitions between leading plantations from different provinces and coffee regions in the E-cafe competition, together with the Ethiopian cupping quality sector, exporters and green coffee traders!

What a wealth of smells, tastes, customs, cultures and languages opened up before me. In this competition we visited a number of cooperatives and plantations. It was so special to see how the Ethiopian pickers and coffee farmers roast their green coffee themselves and immediately after that they crush, grind and pour it into a special coffee pot and pour it out to the circle in the old fashioned way. Afterwards, we bought beautiful coffee lots with Boot Koffie at amounts that were very high for those times. Some flavors I totally remember now, like the Boabedegelo, a rolling chocolate avalanche across your tongue! The customers at Boot loved them!"

Organization:

Getachew works with 416 registered small farmers who collectively own 989 acres of land. The production and processing of the coffee is done in an organic, socially responsible and environmentally friendly way. This method has been verified by BCS OKO and by NOP, EU and JAS Organic.

The small farmers receive premiums on top of the normal berry price, interest-free loans, improved coffee seedlings, processing equipment and training - in productivity, quality and sustainability. Bekele Beriso, a 90-year-old smallholder, explains: "We are partners with Getachew. We work hard to grow coffee so that the buyer can pay a fair price for the coffee and reward us when they are satisfied with our coffee."
