Visiting the coffee farmers of the Kachalu Project in the Santander region
Our colleagues Rick Maas and Tuyet Tran left for Colombia last Monday. They traveled to the Santander region to visit 9 different plantations of the Kachalu Project. The purpose of this trip is to personally talk to the owners of these farms and to learn more about their working methods and the different processing methods. Focus is also on the financial situation of the farmers with the goal of gaining further insights and looking together at how to ensure the future sustainability of the plantations. When asked what the farmers' dreams and goals are, their answer is that at Kachalu they prioritize nature instead of increasing their yields by using non-organic fertilizers and pesticides to increase their production.

Looking at their business from a purely financial standpoint would give them more coffee and less production costs. That touches Rick and Tuyet quite a bit during the conversation.

According to Rick very impressive, is that almost every plantation they visit is a jungle where coffee plants grow. The special thing about this region is that there are a huge number of natural shade trees growing there, which are necessary to protect the coffee plants from drought and sun. Also living there are more than a hundred unique species of birds that provide fertile fertilizer to the coffee plants. An amazing biodiversity! The plantations are located at altitudes ranging from 1100 to 1900 meters.

Kachalu currently consists of 60 farmers. All of them are Organic and Rainforest Alliance certified. These plantations receive the highest bonus for their harvests on the cooperative's plate. Some of these farmers produce our SCA 84+ organic Colombia. For this, BOOT coffee pays more than the bonus they already receive. Rick will go into further detail about this piece when he is back in the Netherlands. We roast the Colombia Kachalu both as espresso, filter and decaffeinated so you can enjoy it to the fullest. The collaboration with this passionate group of entrepreneurs has existed since 2005.

Rick and Tuyet let us know they are deeply impressed with everything they are experiencing. Check out the photos while enjoying a cup of Colombia Kachalu Organic. That way you can travel a little with them. Hear the wind rustling through the rainforest and the sound of tropical birds. Let the flavors of honey, tangerine, dried fruit and chocolate carry you along with this trip through the jungle of Colombia.

Happiness through taste.
