As far as Boot Koffie is concerned, a farmer's livelihood, the best quality coffee and minimal environmental impact are the three essential pillars of corporate responsibility in the coffee world.

In the years 2020 and 2021, Boot Koffie participated with the farmers in the Kachalu cooperative in a pilot of the Future Proof Coffee Collective with True Cost Accounting (TCA). Calculating the true cost of coffee.

Most coffee farming causes a huge environmental impact. Boot Koffie has known for years that growing the highest quality coffee has major positive effects on the coffee farmer's income and reduces the environmental impact. However, the results of the TCA pilot were even better than Boot Koffie expected: the coffee farmer earns a decent income that he can live off and the climate impact on the plantation is very low.

Now Boot coffee is taking the next step. In collaboration with the Climate Neutral Group, Boot Koffie reduces the climate impact of the coffee to zero!

According to the coffee calculator, the carbon footprint of one kilo of 100% Colombia coffee (including 16% roasting loss), 100 m3 of natural gas, and 180 kWh of electricity use is on average - from farm to store - 3.877 kg CO2. The vast majority of this comes from the coffee plantation.

However, Colombia Kachalu coffee has over 90% less plantation CO2 emissions than the average Colombian coffee. This is because the farmers grow organically and therefore do not use artificial fertilizer. And they have planted shade trees: this is better for the coffee plant and actually stores CO2.

Thus, the climate impact of Colombia Kachalu coffee is minimal. The last emissions, for roasting and transport, are offset Boot Koffie, in a nice CO2 reduction project elsewhere, based on the data for the average Colombian Coffee. This makes Kachalu coffee climate-neutral, and thus your cup of coffee does not contribute to the climate problem. It probably even reduces the total CO2 emissions from the farmer's actions.

Boot Koffie has chosen to offset its latest emissions through a project with an official Voluntary Carbon Standard certificate that protects forests from felling and plants new trees in collaboration with the local population.

Jos Cozijnsen, Climate Neutral Group: "It's good that Boot Koffie invests in good organic coffee with a good reward and which is better for the climate. The fact that Boot also compensates the remaining CO2 emissions through us in another certified project proves that Boot takes the climate problem seriously and that the coffee fan is also becoming more aware of it."
