Our Colombia Kachalu coffee comes not from one farmer, but from an entire cooperative! The entire cooperative consists of about 3,000 farmers. About 60 coffee farmers from Santander, Colombia, work together within Kachalu, a project that has been growing organic coffee in a very sustainable way since 1999. These farmers and coffees from this project are all Organic and Rainforest certified, indicating how one with nature these farmers are.

We have been working with these farmers since 2005, and for several years, together with the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros (FNC), we have been ensuring that they receive an even better price for their coffee.

The FNC, founded in 1927, is the national coffee federation of Colombia and was founded by coffee farmers to make better economic and social decisions together, while respecting nature. The FNC promotes the interests of coffee farmers by helping with price support, quality control, exports and sustainability, among other things.

Boot Koffie pays the farmer extra
Kachalu farmers have indicated that they need this extra to continue growing organically. This is because it requires twice as much work (for example, manual weeding with a machete and making natural fertilizer from coffee pulp and chicken manure) and yields 40% less. The bonus allows farmers to continue and improve their sustainable cultivation.

How exactly does the bonus system work and how is the price structured?
The farmer currently receives about 3 million Colombian peso per carga. Kachalu farmers receive a fixed standard bonus. They also earn an additional quality bonus based on the score of their coffee.

What does that look like?

● FNC Base Price

The FNC uses a (fluctuating) base price. This is a combination of:
a. New York Market price
b. Currency from Colombian peso to US Dollar.
c. A differential = an additional amount on top of the market price.
The total of these makes the FNC base price

● Standard Kachalu bonus: 235,000 peso per carga*

The FNC maintains the highest standard bonus for Kachalu Organic-Rainforest grown coffee.

● Extra Boot Koffie Bonus SCA 85+: +265,000 peso per carga*

The highest quality bonus is for coffee that achieves an SCA score of 85 points or higher.

These perks ensure that organic farming has a future, allowing Kachalu farmers to continue investing in sustainable agriculture.

We remain committed to this so that Specialty coffee can continue to be grown with love and respect for nature. Want to taste for yourself how special this coffee is? Then try our Colombia Kachalu Organic Espresso Coffee or the Colombia Kachalu Decaffeinated Espresso Coffee.

* A carga (load in English) is 125 kg of parchment/pergamino coffee beans with their natural, paper-like protective layer. After processing, some 93 - 100 kg of green coffee beans remain. Extra fact: 1 double espresso requires 80 berries = 160 beans.
