The new crop of Kachalu coffee is ready!

It's February, an exciting time. In Colombia, the Kachalu cooperative has selected some special coffee lots for Boot coffee at extra-high quality. This specialty quality is known among coffee nerds as "84+" (based on an internationally recognized standardized scoring system for the quality, taste and aroma of coffee beans). Boat Coffee pays coffee farmers an extra bonus for higher quality coffee beans.

The moment has arrived. The cups of ground coffee are ready on the tasting table in our roastery. In a moment we are going to smell and taste. A large sample shipment of the special lots has been sent from Colombia. If we (Barend and Rick, Boot's tasters) like the taste, this quality is selected specially for Boot coffee, kept separate and shipped to the Netherlands.

Prime
The 2020 harvest for Boot is the first time the Kachalu cooperative has selected these special higher quality lots for an additional premium. Higher quality, higher yield for the farmer. So this is a first.

Kachalu coffee is exported by the F.N.C. This is the support organization of Colombian coffee farmers. In 2018, our coffee controller Rick Maas is visiting farmers in the Kachalu valley. They are also suffering from low commodity prices on the world coffee market. The bonuses that the farmers already receive for their coffee on top of this low "world price" because they work organically, sustainably while preserving and protecting the local rainforests, are still not enough to build a sustainable livelihood. That is why Boot makes the proposal to the FNC to pay an additional premium for 84+ quality. Now on the tasting table is the time when Rick and I will taste the new quality. Do the samples actually taste like "84+"?

Smell and taste
The organic coffee beans are ground. The moment the Kachalu bean is ground, a smell of flowers and cake comes along. Then we pour the water on the ground coffee and smell and taste with the tasting spoon. "Boy oh boy, all the beans," I mutter to myself. Rick and I look at each other happily surprised. "Hooray, this is an 84+ for a reason!". Flavor accents that oscillate between very sweet grapes and peach with an undertone of chocolate emerge and linger pleasantly pure and brightly balanced in the aftertaste.

Colombia Kachalu
Boot Koffie has the espresso and filter variants of the Colombia Kachalu in its range for many years. An absolute taste topper from the finest Colombian organic coffee beans. The soon to be introduced 2020 crop are the tastiest coffee beans. The taste of our traditionally roasted, good coffee beans makes the 84+ difference. So if you want to make the tastiest espresso, filter or ground Colombia coffee at home or in the hospitality industry, make your choice to buy organic coffee beans at BOOT Coffee.
